Miss Universe 2008
Miss Universe 2008, the 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Crown Convention Center (Diamond Bay Resort) in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008 where outgoing titleholder Riyo Mori will crown her successor.
More than 80 contestants are expected to compete in the event which will be broadcast via NBC and Telemundo to TV outlets in more than 180 countries.
The final presentation show is on July 8, the dress rehearsal on July 13 and the live telecast on July 14. Most activities are being held successively in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Nha Trang.

EL CANAL JAPONES FUE DIRECTAMENTE A VENEZUELA LEAN:
La televisora japonesa, NHK, nos visitó atendiendo una solicitud especial hacia nosotros de la Organización Miss Universo, para un programa de 50 minutos a transmitirse en el país asiático, que tratará el tema de la preparación de nuestra Miss Venezuela: captaron imágenes en el gimnasio, pasarela, oratoria, maquillaje y peluquería, además de la valiosa entrevista al Presidente de la Organización Osmel Sousa, donde se tocaron tópicos como la diferencia de la Miss Japón en la actualidad con la Miss Japón de hace algunos años, “una miss mucho más abierta y occidentalizada”. En la entrevista percibimos la necesidad de conocer en ellos, el resultado extraordinario y positivo de nuestras misses en los concursos de belleza, “el no sé qué” con el que se conducen las muchachas venezolanas aquí y lejos de nuestras fronteras, la respuesta del Sr. Osmel Sousa fue directa: -es una mezcla entre belleza exterior, seguridad y proyección”.
Al hacerle la entrevista a Dayana, consultándole acerca de su motivación al participar en el Miss Venezuela, ella sencillamente acotó que era un sueño de su abuelita, donde constantemente, desde pequeña, su abuela le había expresado que sería Miss Venezuela, y que no se lo creyó hasta que la coronaron, lo que la hace muy feliz.
Sin duda, los visitantes del Japón se quedaron boquiabiertos al observar la belleza de Dayana, fresca, natural, espontánea y auténtica, con la sonrisa a flor de labios.
Hace algunos días, el jueves 5 de junio, el Embajador de La República Socialista de Vietnam en Venezuela, Excelentísimo Señor, Tran Thanh Huan, ofreció una cena de cumpleaños en honor a nuestra Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza.
Dayana conoció al Excelentísimo Señor Embajador días antes, en ocasión de solicitar su visa para el mencionado país, fecha en que se conocieron y estrecharon lazos de amistad. En esa oportunidad, Dayana simpatizó con toda la representación diplomática en Venezuela lo que contribuyó a tan gentil invitación de la familia diplomática.
En la más reciente reunión El excelentísimo Embajador y su señora esposa, cocinaron especialmente para Dayana, elaborando platos típicos del país asiático. En el intercambio, dialogaron sobre la visión que tienen los vietnamitas de la mujer y los lazos que ambos países comparten en materia cultural y económica, así como también nuestra belleza criolla pudo probarse el traje típico de esa nación. Es de hacer notar que su país es antípoda del nuestro, lo que le añade un dato curioso a la configuración de la participación de nuestra Dayana Mendoza.
Por otro lado, el excelentísimo Embajador personalmente, le hizo un entrevista para los medios oficiales de Vietnam y quedó asombrado por la rapidez en que ella mostró aprender el idioma de su país.

it is estimated that Venezuelans spend one fifth of their disposable income on beauty products, a startling statistic for a country in which 80 percent of its population lives below the poverty line.
Osmel Sousa runs the Miss Venezuela Academy from a 1950s house perched in the mountains.
Dr. Edurado Krulig, the country’s leading plastic surgeon, has been working with the academy for the past ten years. He says he usually works on the contestants. From his hyper-modern office that looks like a set from Kubrick’s Space Odyssey, he explains that the most common operations are breast augmentation, thigh lipo-sculpting, and waist reduction. Plastic surgery, he says, is readily accepted as a valid means of beautification, because in Venezuela, the girls are judged on being "beautiful" and not on being natural. These surgeries are indispensable for most of the Misses (as the contestants are known) who are striving to have 90-60-90 bodies—the coveted measurement in centimeters (36-24-36 in inches) of the bust, waist, and hips, respectively.
Dr. Sonja, "one of the contestants had a nose that went down which we could fix with the new collagen, all in ten minutes and for a very small price. Or, when you have childhood acne scars, you can fill them by destroying the scar from underneath and promoting the growth of their own collagen." One look at the Misses’ perfectly symmetrical wrinkle-free face with smooth, flawless skin, and you are convinced of the success of the techniques.
Dr. Kaswan calls himself a smile architect. For him and Sousa, a Misses’ smile is her most valuable asset. Because of the tight schedule, there is no time for orthodontics. Braces and retainers are out the question. Instead, he works with cosmetic dentistry techniques. During their first meeting, the Misses, Dr. Kaswan, and the rest of the team work on a "smile design." From there they will begin to modify crooked teeth with composites, which will make the teeth appear aligned; or they will cut back on gums to make the teeth appear larger. He explains that these non-traditional techniques are gaining popularity because of how much can be done for little time and money. He calls it "permanent make-up." Dr. Kaswan said that the girls are so pleased with the results that some have told him, "‘Maybe I won’t win, but you know my teeth look great.’ " "And," he continued, "that’s why they all want to be in Miss Venezuela."
The Misses stretch, run, lift weights, hike, swim and do yoga every day. Their diets consist of tuna, to promote muscle tone; as well as green leaves and pineapple, which is a natural diuretic and keeps their sugar levels high. Although the regimen is extreme, and the women often faint during their workouts, the academy swears by this formula. For the Academy, the hard work will pay off at the end of the week when the Misses are weighed in on medical scales and measured to the millimeter. And, as the Academy reminds the women, it’s only for a few months. Not surprisingly, the school doesn’t have a nutritionist on staff who would surely disapprove of such an unbalanced diet.
Though the country’s racial makeup is 67 percent mestizo, 21 percent white, and 10 percent black, the winners at the Miss Venezuela Contest are mostly light-skinned. The racial makeup of the pageant is not a matter of discrimination on behalf of the judges. The popular vote, a nationwide effort where people of all backgrounds participate via phone and Internet, has almost always coincided with the judge’s decision. The results are perhaps best seen as a reflection of what many Venezuelans consider the "ideal." In a country where most people have dark hair, toasty skin and brown eyes, it is no surprise that being fair-skinned, blond and green eyed is considered exotic.
Aside from oil, the Miss Venezuelas are the only national product that continue to have a place in the international market

The 80 contestants of Miss Universe 2008 took part in one of the most interesting events of the pageant, the National Costume competition.
In an event held at the Lions Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City; and televised live by HTV9, each contestant paraded on stage displaying the crafts and cultures of their countries.
A distinguished panel of judges was in charge of selecting the Top 10 Best Costumes.

But I was wondering - thought the bikini winner was absolutely beautiful, although slightly bigger than I expected, does anyone know the ideal sort of size for a Miss Universe contestant?
