Seriously,Ris Low bought her crown. Everybody knows that. She can't even speak a proper sentence. She will definiteley win Singapore the " Beauty NO Brains " title if there was one. Too bad there isn't! :( Poor Ris is gonna come back empty handed and everyone knows that! Extremely bias judges.

nor surprising. rumored that she has a sugar daddy to buy the crown for her.

OM MY GOOD LORD!!! You mean Miss. Booms aka as Miss Persona-li-li-ty (watch her interview at RazorTV) won the crown! Jeez! Did we appoint deaf judges?!? Did they not hear how she sounds when she opens her mouth? Is this what is going to represent us in SA? Hope the pageant is going to be held at the Zoo in SA. Maybe the animals wont mind how she sounds!

What a shame! Now the world is probably gonna think Singaporean girls are just a bunch of bimbos, and worse than Ms Ris Low.

What have we become? You mean Singapore don't even have a single lady who looks good, got brain and can talk properly?? What a big shame!

The sugar daddy should save that 50k and buy some lessons for her.

not even pretty, no brains, cannot speak english to save her life, and has atrocious pronunciation and diction... what a bloody disgrace to singapore... i think the judges should wake up and see what kind of terrible image this girl is gonna portray to the WHOLE WORLD....

I have to agree to EVERY post that are already on here! I think she's a TOTAL DISASTER and with her English, I can't imagine the amount of shame she'll bring to the country and seriously! I think organizations, sponsors and everyone involved in making the event happened need to do some serious soul searching to have chosen someone like this to represent not only Singapore but their products and their own brands. Not only will she trash the image of Singaporean girls but SINGAPOREANS in general when Miss World 2009 actually start airing around the world. and SERIOUSLY ... ZIP-BRAS ??!!

I hate to say this, but I will anyway... Is this young lady SERIOUSLY the best Singapore has to offer? You've GOT to be kidding me! Given that these sorts of contests don't usually attract the 'highest' calibre of local women to begin with, there are plenty of women on your sunny island who are capable of holding an intelligent conversation while being pleasant on the eye. No offence to the young lady in question, but I'm inclined to agree with the comment about animals in the zoo. There is more to beauty than a pretty face, and at such a young age, it would be in her best interest to see this as an experience to improve herself - in more ways than one. Perhaps she'll come down with a mysterious case of laryngitis so all she'll be able to do in SA is smile :)

This is totally absurd. I can't believe she's even taking a diploma. Perhaps she should just admit that she's taking her PSLE this year? Oh wait, what's that you're telling me? You mean she hasn't even graduated from kindergarden yet?

    happyeverafter said...

She is not rich. She stays in HDB. She comes from a predominantly mandarin-speaking family. She goes to neighbourhood school. So what do you expect? She is a product of our education system. Don't blame her. Blame our education system. By the way, she got A1 for her "O" level English.

She is definitely not stupid but she just cannot articulate as well as she is not exposed to such interviews and such.

She would be better off speaking singlish like what she is doing everyday instead of trying to "sound" different. And yes, her diction is poor and pronunciation atrocious. But is beauty contest only about the ability to speak and string a couple of sentences together. She fails miserably in this aspect but it is not fatal, is it?

She has a heart of gold. Very kind-hearted girl. She has no airs about her and she is friendly and polite to everyone - including taxi uncles or the cleaning-aunties. I believe she would be a great ambassador for charity work.

She has a beauty of a heart which unfortunately, most of us cannot see.

And if you must assign blame. Blame the judges. They chose her.

i can definitely believe what happyeverafter said is true.. ris low may or may not be kind-hearted/generous/sweet/etc., and there may be unfair slander abt her buying the crown or whatever...
BUT the bottom-line is her english is atrocious and the whole concept of someone who's speaking that way being miss sg world is unbelievable - no need to think in terms of the whole country yet, don't tell me there isn't a single girl in that pageant who's pretty, plus has a REASONABLE STANDARD of english???
ris low definitely can be considered pageant-winner material in terms of looks (singapore-standad anyway) - but it's not like she was miles ahead of the other contestants. surely there was some other contestant who is as or almost as pretty, but can better represent the image of sinagpore in a global competition??
    I DO blame the judges.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?? WHAT WILL THE REST OF THE WORLD THINK OF SINGAPORE GIRLS' STANDARD???

    happyeverafter said...

    MD,

There are girls as pretty as her and probably can speak better than her. I was there in the finals watching.

In terms of look and poise and walks, Ris is probably among the Top 5. So what happen to the other contestants?

I cannot answer this question. You have to ask the judges. In the final segment of the questions and answers, Ris did well to answer her question. Some of the contestants did fumble although they could be more fluent.

The video interview was done a month before the finals and I think the judges did not see the video at all. The video is not part of the judging, unfortunately.

They based their judging on the preview + the finals itself.

There could be some problem in the judging process - I cannot comment further. Even as a friend of Ris, I did not wish for her to win knowing that she will be in the limelight and under extreme scrutiny especially with regards to her relatively poor speech and interviewing skills.

But as a friend of Ris and knowing her - she has a heart of gold. In terms of being able to carry out the duties of a Miss Singapore World with regards to charitable causes, she will be eminently qualified. And probably the judges saw a side of her that the rest did not see. Most of you only saw the video segment - the worst of her - which unfortunately was not used in the judging at all.

Her "O" level result is pretty decent. Would put many of you to shame. So don't make baseless assumptions.

She can't speak. FULLSTOP. That is it. Does not mean she is stupid or what. Make fun of her speech. Anything else is just your assumption.

Kick her a** and make the 1st runner-up winner. I admit that Singaporeans' English isn't the best but this is just way too much! We are supposed to bring pride and honour to our nation, not disgrace ourselves. I know that this is a beauty pageant but hey, there has got to someone beautiful enough out there that can speak standard (I'm not even asking for fluent here) English so that at least we can understand what she's trying to say. And for those who try to argue for her that Malay is the official language, what are you trying to suggest? She can't even grasp the international language, lest learn another. If you are suggesting that Singlish is "Uniquely Singapore", perhaps you'd want to think again. I am very sure that there are proper occasions to use (and NOT use) it.

    Er. Okay- Ris Low.
Right. Ms World is definitely about looks, but also about brains!
Its not just about stringing a few sentences together! Brains are important. She takes longer than a few seconds to gather her thoughts and come up with a less- than sloppy answer! The whole world is going to be watching this- its going to reflect badly on our country!- Judges, please, for the sake of everyone, get the hell off the panel and let the president or prime minister do the judging- they know how to pick a girl that is articulate and perhaps, faster in her responses.

Plus...they would easily have a more decent grasp of English...and i'm pretty sure that they've been helping ppl just as much in their own ways...

    happyeverafter said...

    Amethyst 6 '08,

Yes. I am a guy. You want to test me? Or you want to meet me?

Since when is Miss world more about brains? But that aside. Her inability to articulate her thoughts does not mean she is stupid.

If it is about ability to speak and brain.. then they should have auditions to ask contestants to speak and weed them out. And also IQ test as well.

But they have none of these.. They have catwalks and fashion parades. The contestants only require to give a brief introduction of themselves. Questions and answers only in the finals.

If you think she is crap.. then blame the judges as I said.. not her.

    happyeverafter said...

As I said, you can ridicule her diction or speech.

    But not:

    1) Accuse her of "buying" the crown

    2) Sleeping with the judges..

    3) Saying that she got no brain - obviously she has one.. she just has no ability of showing it.

    4) That she bought her "O" level cert. OK.. tell me, how you buy?

And lastly, just how "shameful" it is for not being able to articulate well? Is face all that important to Singaporeans. Are we all so good and so proud in our ability to talk?

the above type of comments showed the "most ugly" side of Singaporeans. We just accuse for the sake of accusing - hiding behind the internet. Make baseless comments that cannot be substantiated..

Yes, it is fun to laugh at the expense of someone else. but it truly reflects the "smallness" in us. No empathy. And we all just feel so ashamed that we are associated with her that we had to demean her to such levels?

After all, she is only 19 years old. Cut her some slack.

    happyeverafter said...

I see this "mob lynching" mentality here but worse in STOMP and clubsnap..

When someone is down.. we take delight in adding to it.. stabbing in our knives..

Naturally for someone in the lime light and with such a bad interview - she will be expecting lots of criticism.

It is OK to criticize her speech, her diction or even her ability to think on the feet. But beyond that, why are we insinuating that she was sleeping with the judges or that she bought the crown or even her "O" level cert. These are below the belt attacks - totally uncalled for.

It just reflect so poorly on us. If it is Singaporeans that we should be ashamed of, it would be these people..

Ms World is about looks- they are certainly more important, and if she impresses the judges with her heart and looks then that's good for her, but there'sbound to be some interviews or such at Ms World with the contestants, and during the introduction, if she stumbles or can't articulate properly, then she's off to a bad start, isn't she? My advice to her is to take up some speech lessons- pronto.

Gosh, this is fast turning into an online battle. But seriously, if they want to hold a Ms World contest and not receive strong criticisms, than they definitely should just tape everyone's mouths and judge on their looks.
And even though " Beauty is better tha brains" thing applies in everyday lives, many people do not agree that it applies in Ms World or Ms Universe.
Than in that case, shouldn't they just judge on looks...cut the speech crap. If not, Singaporeans and many other countries with bad english- speakers are sure to come under the fire of the general public.

    To Happyeverafter:
Haha, good luck with defending your friend, darling, there are many people who are definitely going to fight with ya;)

    To happyeverafter:

    You said that
"when Singaporeans criticize other people, they forgot to look at themselves in the mirror" and that it is this that reflects badly on us. How is that relevant to this argument? Sure we have our flaws, but you're exaggerating them to make your own point sound convincing, to make us feel guilty when we expressed our opinion. You're making us feel ashamed when we have done nothing wrong but simply express our views.

Secondly, while it is encouraging to hear that Ms Ris Low has a heart of gold, i do not believe that it can be used as an argument that she is deserving of the title. There are many people who has hearts of gold, so because of that should they all be deserving of Ms Singapore? If she has a heart of gold, but no well articulation or enough intelligence (no offense) then shouldnt she be much well off and suitable for becoming a charity ambassador instead of a national ambassador?

However, i do feel that everyone is being too harsh and ridiculous by saying that she won by buying her crown or doing somethings. We should not insult the other party, simply say what we think in an acceptable way. I truly apologize for that.

I hope her speech courses work, since i highly doubt her title will be taken back.

I would like to make a point that getting A1 for english doesnt mean she's good at it!It could be a stroke of luck? Its the plain truth that her spoken English isn't very good, and in such competitions, articulation is important but the quality of the answer counts too! So if she comes out with a good answer, her poor command of English would be immaterial.

    Anonymous said...

It's really easy to get an A1 at O-levels for English Language. As an EL teacher who has been teaching for a decade, I can safely state that it's quite surprising to see students secure A1 at O-levels for ELang and then struggle to pass General Paper in JC. O-level ELang is very easy because students can score simply by being able to write a decent narrative essay. GP, on the other hand, the real test of ELang ability requires conceptualization and argumentative skills. Those of you who diss the Spore education system, ask yourselves if you code-switch and speak like Riz at times as well. She is symptomatic of our culture. Riz's inability to speak is a reflection of how Sporeans speak in general in English. While it is surprising that she made it this far in the competition and that she actually chose to take part in the competition considering how difficult it is for her to vocablize her thoughts in an organized manner (as shown by the video), the people who really did a bad job are the judges and organizers. If we're not able to attract the right calibre of representatives for an international competition of this standard, we really shouldn't send anyone at all. Giving the international audience such a representative at a media event watched all around the world is a really bad publicity move for our country. We've spent so much money on F1, Youth Olympics, YOG, Humanitarian Funding...and when we finally open our mouths...it's Riz Low? If the organizers read this, for the love of Spore's honour, please get someone to tutor her NOW in basic articulation, current affairs and even knowledge about fashion before the pageant. YOU ORGANIZERS desperately need to do a PYGMALION now to prevent Singapore from being severely humiliated at this international event. Come on, if you guys chose the girl, for goodness sake, coach her before sending her into the Lion's Den in South America so that she doesn't sink even before she gets there.

    Mobile-san,

I have absolutely no arguments about people wanting to criticize her speech or her diction or even her ability to think. I think it is valid after watching the video.

But here are many uncalled comments that she bought the crown, that she slept with the judges or even bought her o-level cert. These are not relevant at all and totally unsubstantiated.

The reason I mentioned about her heart of gold is because there are many qualities of her (required for a beauty queen) that has gone unnoticed.

At the very outset, I said that I also think she is not good enough to win because of deficiency in the speech area but somehow she won.

    happyeverafter said...

I refer to anonymous on 12 Sep 11:41am.

EXACTLY. As I said in the preview there are not required to answer any question. Just a short introduction of themselves.

In the FINALS itself, she did answer her question well - to the applause of everyone present. Her spoken English may not be good but her answer is short and sharp and to the point. some of her closest competitors fumbled with their answers although they could speak better English.

I am just saying that if you want a beauty queen to be able to "speak properly" then you could have a audition to eliminate those you think would not make it.

If you look at the criteria for selecting the beauty queen - the ability to speak and articulate is only judged in the question and answer segment.

    happyeverafter said...

As I said, the way she speaks is a reflection of how we educate and teach our students. She is really "so singaporeans" and most of us (especially those who speak mandarin at home), would speak like that.

Some of us would have more exposure and fare better. But if you are in a neighboorhood school and speaking mandarin most of the time, your spoken English would leave much to be desired.

And what so shameful about speaking in this manner. I would speak like her using Singlish most of the time but because I am much more exposed to the outside world having interaction of people from all over the world - I can change to speaking "standard English" easily.

I don't find speaking "Singlish" or having poor diction such a shameful act. After all, English is not our mother-tongue. People from other parts of the world are more forgiving to us for speaking Singlish. I have asked many foreign friends what they think of the "Ris low interview" - yes, they know that she cannot speak proper english but they are more understanding since they know that "English" is not her mother tongue. We Singaporeans are more harsh and as if we all can speak proper standard English most of the time.

    D.v said...

Heated arguement but i see a group of mature online roamers making reasonable comments from their stand point, well, at least it's better as compared to youtube. Personally I think it's more than speech problem that Ris Low is having. First, she cannot converse well. I don't have to say much about it. But if she had decided to go for miss singapore and represent her country, she should at least take up some course to brush her language, reflexes and walk together with all the qualities that will be judged eventually. Should she has a heart of gold, logically, she should be able to show it out, shift the focus of audiences to her quality, rather than making them noticing something they shouldn't have. i know it's unintentionally but if she could be prepared for this competition, maybe all this wouldn't happen. BE SINCERE if she really wants this. she knows her shortcomings, she should worked on it before it goes on public and go ahead, amazed all her personal friends too. nothing comes easy. true she might be a kind-hearted girl and that's the exact reason why she should not be manified for the wrong reason. maybe she just went to the wrong competition 'cos miss singapore is too commercial and political for a 'kind-hearted' girl. no offences, just making reasons out of all these.

    D.v said...

But i must say, it's really wrong to conclude and accuse her of buying or sleeping around for the title. yet, calling her 'no brainer' only shows what kind of responses she is getting for giving answers that is really not up to the audiences' expectation.

Again, if she cannot handle the media, maybe she's not fit for this. The competition is a callous fight between ladies. Blessed her.

Oh gosh. To the English Language teacher, who remained annonymous:
You're an english teacher. You write with perfect tense and grammar, yet spell Ris Low's name wrongly. Bravo.

Anyway, yes, we should not bash Ris Low, yes, she should take lessons pronto, yes, its the judges fault, but is does the list end there?
Ris is also partly to blame. If she knows that she cannot speak well, and she knows that her english is definitely no match for others, then why bother going? She mayhave won, but look at all the flak received from the general public. Pageants like these do not garner much media coverage, at least not until the winner emerges...which is why the best in us Singaporeans are not brought out. That is a very sad issue...

Maybe we should put things in perspective. What if the interview was done in mandarin, and Ris Low speaks good english and sucks at mandarin?

Digress a little: Be it first or second language or whatever we call it, being Chinese and not being able to speak proper mandarin or intentionally despise the language (speaking chinese is viewed as lower caste to some singaporeans) is outrageous.

Maybe we should interview the interviewer in Mandarin and laugh over her poor diction instead.

Firstly, I am not one of the judge. don't try to be smart.

Yes, I am real. I spoke to REAL friends who are foreigners - both native speakers of the English language and non-native speakers. Both types of foreigner are much more sympathetic and understanding than Singaporeans... who really think too much of themselves.. as if ALL of them can speak proper English..

By the way, she is taking the criticism very well for a 19 year old. It will spur her on to improve herself. And she never dispute the fact that she cannot speak well. But there are many other uncalled for remarks which is hurting for a young woman. She is not even an adult yet, legally.

And yes, speaking non-perfect English is not a shameful act. What if your mother or grandmother cannot speak English... is it that shameful?

Don't compare with newscasters. They are paid to speak proper English and they have to do it well. But is it a must for normal people in the streets to speak perfect English?

    happyeverafter said...

    sadsmurf,

I agreed with what you are saying. I was telling her to speak naturally like how she is speaking everyday instead of "trying to sound different"

happyeverafter = you are over emotional and please stop over reacting ... vomit blood

everybody should have the common sense to speak good english and have the common sense to speak whatever type of english they want to speak especially if they are in the wet market or with the ahpek in the coffeeshop.

you should not dictate that since english is not our mother tongue that it is OK to speak bad english. and stop being smarty pants ... english is taught in schools so stop turning this into a emotional debate for your own convenience of speaking bad english!

sadsmurf = carry on being sad !

    happyeverafter said...

    Anonymous September 14, 2009 5:37 PM,

Stop trying to be smart as well.

I did not say it is ok to speak bad english. But NOT everyone can speak good and proper english. So don't look down on people who can't. Your grandfather or grandmother probably cannot speak good English - what so shameful?

English is taught in schools.. but why students still speaking bad English + Singlish? Obviously, it is more than what that is being taught. The whole environment in which the language is being spoken has to be taken into account.

People of the lower-income group - they speak mostly Mandarin at home. When in school talking to their friends, they speak Mandarin and Singlish although some may speak proper English. We need to change the whole environment..

    Anonymous said...

you wrote "Your grandfather or grandmother probably cannot speak good English - what so shameful?"

hey why you bringing grandfather and grandmother in the picture - got nothing else to talk about is it?

let met tell you ... people of that generation was so accomodating and was nothing like YOU or what is happening to the your generation now ... they spoke malay to everybody the language of communication during that time. and if they cannot speak english to others of different races, they spoke malay - smarty pants ... the language of communication ... at that time ...

talk about NOW not about the grandmother and grandfather era ...

    happyeverafter said...

What I am saying is not being able to speak proper English fluently is not shameful. There are many people out there on the streets who can't speak proper English. They need to hide?

How well we speak depends on the environment that we grow up in - the language we use to converse on a daily basis. And what so shameful about growing up in a pre-dominantly mandarin-speaking environment?

Yes. Granted that there are people who can speak good english despite the environment that they grow up with.. but surely, we don't have to hang everyone with shame for not being able to speak proper English.

Don't speak well.. just need to learn and improve. Why must people ridicule these people with shame.. so that they will not speak again? And they remain stagnant and not improve?

To that Anonymous who said Ris Low's face looks likes its been ran over by a truck, she looks perfectly fine to me and u're probably just criticising her cause you probably don't look any better yourself.

    Dawn said...

happyeverafter, I beg to differ with your point on how it is not shameful not to be able to speak English fluently.

Yes, it is not shameful if you have not learnt it for an extended period of time, say if you were a migrant worker needing to learn it for basic communication purposes.

It is, however, extremely shameful if you have been in school for at least ten years of your life, with the English Language being the main mode of communication and especially since English -is- the medium in which subjects, aside from Mother Tongue, is taught. It speaks for itself - the attitude towards learning, the desire to want to speak better - sorely missing.

You say Ris Low grew up in a family where Mandarin is spoken dominantly and thus, the lack of exposure, explaining her speech impediment, which in my honest opinion is utter bollocks. The issue of exposure is no longer in the books with the advent of television and sites like Youtube. I know people who come from backgrounds, that you claim Ris Low came from, speak perfect English or are at the very least effectively bilingual.

Moreover, with English as the lingua franca here, it is important that a representative of Singapore in an international be able to do this fact justice and speak reasonably fluent English.

    Ris Low - sadly incoherent.

That said, I do feel bad that she has become the butt of jokes and subject of spoofs.

But, she did ask for it. And if she did enter the competition eyes wide shut, then, well, that says a lot about her, doesn't it?

    Anonymous said...

Singaporean's standard of English may not always be as perfect as those of the Britain's, but definitely, it is not as trashy as her's. Sure, we do speak English and Singlish, most of the times using a varied mix of the two especially with people whom we're familiar with. More importantly is the ability to interchange the use of them. Ms Low obviously has either no sense of standard English to begin with or she just doesn't know the place and time to use Singlish. She definitely seems to be courting her death by presenting her pathetic command of English to internet viewers as a representative of Miss Singapore. Most Singaporeans try their best to speak proper English (to their best efforts) at formal events. I personally doubt Ms Low's understanding of her participation in the nationwide competition at the time of the filming for her promotional video. That being said, I do believe she will show improvement of the language for the international competition, though not to the level where she can easily put out the local flames, yet.

    w said...

I am surprised at the sheer volume of venomous vitriol dispensed about Ris Low on the Internet.

As far as I can see,
    1. Yes, her pronunciation leaves much to be desired. But I have heard far worse, and so has any man who's been in the army before (or maybe it's primarily women who are bashing her; the la-di-da upper class sort who don't dine in hawker centres and have a chance to hear hawker centre English).
    2. Her grammar isn't actually that bad; it's not so incoherent that she's entirely incomprehensible.
    3. The "hospitaterlity" thing seemed to me to be an almost-Freudian slip (she nearly said hospital and caught herself in time), which could happen to any one of us.
    4. The YouTube videos seem to have been motivated by someone with an axe to grind. The videos don't merely criticise her speech - one of those even claims that she walks like a robot.
    5. It's not surprising that she obtained an A1 in O Level English. Firstly, the paper isn't that tough (as the anonymous English teacher said), and secondly, it emphasises writing skills. Who's to say she can't write well (and even if she can't, she'd probably write better than a good number of Americans posting in online forums)?
    6. She did not use a single lah, lor, or meh, which I find commendable.
    7. She was trying her best to sound correct, and that made things worse. If she'd spoken in a typical Singaporean accent she'd probably have drawn less fire, since that'd at least sound more natural. Unfortunately, I think the speech classes might exacerbate the problem.

it doesn't matter if it's ris low or ris high representing us. we'll never win.

it's not like there had been a streak of winners from singapore, unlike venezuela. so putting ris low, or some chao ah lian smoking at far east plaza wouldn't make much of a difference at the outcome of the results.

i guess some sponsors, or organizers finally realised the fact (after so bloody long) that singaporean girls aren't really attractive at all by international standards, thus the downplay of miss singapore universe event in the recent years.

everyone should take a chill pill and feel happy for ris for getting this chance of her lifetime. hopefully after this she'll uses her new found fame to do good like eunice olson, rather than a catalyst for materialistic gratification.

And anyway, those who have never been to a hawker center are plain idiots. But since Ris Low is trying to represent Singapore, naturally she'll be criticized...and speech lessons do NOT deteriorate her speech abilities..they jus help her improve articulation, that's all...they won't tell her to put on fake accent or something...but I also feel its bad to slander her if she's trying her best...

    Anonymous said...

Please don't act all "atas" and stuff by degrading her English, because you'll only be indirectly insulting an easy 40-55% of your own local populace. She is only 19, just a year older than me (I skipped a year in school), and is able to take all the "crap" you guys throw at her, honestly, I don't know if i would be able to do the same!

Seriously, who are we to judge? For decades, the label "ugly Singaporeans" is tagged to us and still is. When will we learn, when can we stop? I feel so ashamed, not for the disgrace nor the embarrassment brought by people who tried but the narrow minds of us, trying to belittle others when they failed, rubbing further on the wounds and don't even care if they hurt anyone.

20 years ago, China was thought as crude and uncilivized. We laughed, we made jokes but today, do you know how many Chinese have degree cert or higher? Millions! That's 1 degree cert for each SIngaporean, maybe more. Keep this up and i assure you, when the day China leads the World, we are still the "Ugly Singaporeans but of course, by then it would be 丑陋的新加坡人!

Yes, it's true that she didn't do a good job and screwed things up but why are you the ones critisizing? Miss World competition is an international competition, if there's really something grave about her, trust you and me, our Government will take things into their hands as they have always been. Give her a break! I'm rather surprised that she's actually handling this well (from interview with reporter) for a 19 years old. When I was 19, I hardly even stepped foot into Orchard area.

She was just nervous and caught unprepared for the sudden interview. I can see that exactly cos she's representing us, she was trying hard not to speak Singlish, so was slow and stuttered with her words. However like i said she got nervous and lost her thoughts, resulting to what we see online now.

Last but not least, please be more accepting, overlook her wrong (including her past) and focus on her good. Her courage, her physical qualities, "kind heart" (as quoted by happyeverafter) Mark Lee said in his movie 三个好人, "法官判了我十年,你们却判我一辈子!" Don't be so quick to judge, especially when you do not know the person well. Spare the judgement, you may need that one fine day too.

PS: I'm from a neighbourhood school, only got D7 for my English, so please forgive me if i have lots of error in this relatively long message... and PLEASE spare me the judgement! :)

Not being able to speak proper English is besides the point now. The main point is...why try too hard to pull off a fake accent which went all wrong? Since her diction is already terrible, why even try to slang when it makes it sound so freaking disgusting? Just be natural about things, and all will be fine. It really disgusts me when someone is so fake. Their sincerity is really questionable? If she thought that she could impress others out there with her "OH SO WONDERFUL ACCENT", then I am sorry to say that she is "OH SO WRONG".

With regards to integrity, shouldn't that be an important and crucial determining factor? When harmless photos of Rachel Kum having nights of fun and not causing anybody harm, were spread around, people couldn't wait for her title to be stripped off. Now?

THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE BLAME THE SYSTEM OR OURSELVES AND DEEM HER AS FAULTLESS. There's still people much more deserving of the title than her and THE PROBLEM THAT WE SHOULD ARGUE FOR IS WHY SHE SHOULDN'T BE OUR REPRESENTATIVE and NOT why we should stop arguing just cos we are just as "bad" as her.

Jun-san said that " people from over the world can see a bunch of Singaporeans critisising their own beauty queen" and that we're embarrasing ourselves by doing that. Why not let Rachel Kum represent Singapore then? Her english is perfect and so is her appearence. However, the papers, wanting a story, dug up some of her personal history (her "wild" 21st b'day) and used it against her.

You seriously think this is an issue on who represents Singapore? I don't think so, because the "perfect" beauty queen can never be found, simply because no one is perfect.

As for "local" who claim that you do not have a "plank" in your eye, think again, i suggest you look back on the posts the majority have posted and then try making an educated conclusion.

Come on guys, give her credit for trying!

Let us cool down and analyze, a person character of Miss Ris Low, at the age of 17yrs committed such a crime (credit cards fraud), mean that she was a lazy cum materialism person who chase for luxury lifestyle by any means.
Got caught and got two years probation sentence, during the two years , I don’t think she repented, still hope that she could use her sexy appearance to exchange for fame, even lied to the beauty entry prerequisite, she should know herself very well about her own academic ability, but yet she dare to go ahead to the contest.
She even won the contest in the end, what kinds of system are Singapore beauty contests using all the time?? On paper it may seem all kinds of rules and regulation , behind the screen, all kinds of dirty practices appeared, if nothing happen we praise ourselves our leadership, when faults or mistakes a raised, we finds some scapegoats and points all fingers at them, this is Singapore right??

I strongly felt that it wasn’t her fault, this got to go Singapore social roots, our social roots got a damn big problems, and it will get even bigger if our government don’t care, they only focus on the potential family, their kids and their future, who care about those kids who weren’t attending school, loitering around the hdb voidecks or malls, smoking, playing poker cards, taking alcohol and having early hood sexual intercourse , and why their parents don’t know how to guide them?
Will they become another example of their parent in the future? Can we blame those kids or theirs parents?
What natural resources do Singapore have, nothing but human being, why don’t our government cherish our only resource, we will just a small country with little population, is it very difficult to accomplish? What future do Singapore have?

Don't you guys have better things to do than replying just to critisize on others? Happyeverafter is defending for his very friend he deems worthy. Who or What are you attacking for? The 1st runner up or the contestants who lost to her? Don't tell me you are doing it for the whole Nation, I know I don't need that, so do many others. If it doesn't really concern you shut the xxxx up! If you really need to bitch, bitch over a drink with your friends.

Comment once or twice is enough, there's no need to go over and over and over and over and over again and again! This whole issue doesn't concern most of you who critisized yet you made it sounds like it has everything to do with you! You relative of Ris or member of the Parliaments? Do you think by writing those shits make you any holier than Ris? Everyone has their can of worms, just that Ris' was opened. Wait till yours is open and see if you will prefer the criticism or the mercy. 己所不欲,勿施于人. Do more good, not evil. If you have something good to comment, feel free to write it. I never say it's a waste of time to write blog but the fact that people can go over and over and over just to critisize for others. Why the childish act? Did she offend you in person? Just treat it like you are watching a show or reading a book and get over with. I'm not trying to be nice, i too find that she spoke badly on screen but I didn't find the need to rub it in. So why are you so against Ris?

    To: happyeverafter,
Now that the shit has hit the fan, I wonder what do you have to say?

Let's face it- the charges are not just a "moment's folly" as this bimbo claims. (It's a wonder that she even knows what 'folly' means). A 'moment's folly' might be someone who has implusively fliched a lipstick ONCE.

Nope, she WILLFULLY used 7 people's credit cards, to the tune of S$8,000 and it was 60 charges.

That doesn't seem like a 'moment's folly'. That seems like calculated theft. Simple as that.

One more question for you (I was the one who wrote the other question about the 'shit hitting the fan') - you seem to be so defensive, and I believe that you also went into another forum trying to defend Ris.

Well, my question for you is all this crap about her getting A1 - like others have said before, A1s will get you into poly.

And now that the Sunday Times i/v is out (27Sept), she apparently didn't have A1. So just what are you talking about? Did you think that all the shit wasn't going to hit the fan?

Did you think that just because she somehow mananged to pull off the probation thing (which btw, surprised quite alot of people because of the extent of the crime) -- did she think that she could also pull off not informing the pagaent organisations, or even signing off on the pre-requisite form as not having any criminal offence?

Did she think that people are going to 'carry' her so far?

When one has such a minset, it often means one thing in a psychologist's DSM-IV list...

    happyeverafter said...

I refrain from posting after a while because I do not see any point in doing so.

Yes, she is a personal friend of mine but it does not mean that I condone or agree with what she has done.

At the outset, I have said that I did not wish for her to win and I think she is not good enough to win - but unfortunately, she won.

We have talked about her poor English and diction and pronunciation and there is no need to go further into this. I have told her to speak naturally - like what she is doing everyday, unfortunately for the first interview - I think she was ill-prepared and she was nervous (first time being interviewed) and she "tried" too hard to "sound good" - it backfired big time as we now have the classic video.

Yes, she is damn atrocious in the interview. When she listen to herself - she gave herself "0" marks as she wanted to hide her face as well. But sad to say, it is all for the world to see.

That interview was done on July 3rd and for almost a month while it was on the internet, no one took much notice of it. The finals itself was on 31st July. But after she won, that interview video became very hot especially after a sunday times article about how we were so mean to our beauty queen.

That is so much for her spoken English. Yes, very bad. But she won. And she was judged during the finals but not using the interview. If everyone feels that she is ill-suited to represent Singapore - complain to the contest organizer. What is the use of bashing her? Yes, you can bash her for all you want but it won't change the outcome.

And then in end September the credit card fraud was publicized. Now, as a friend, I was aware of this. At the outset, I have advised her not to participate in this Miss Singapore World contest. And along the way, I have asked her to quit many times. Even after she won, I have advised her to quit. But of course, she is very determined. It is her dream and being a friend, I can only support her in spirit.

The offence was committed in 2008 - when she was not even 18 years of age. It was of course wrong and madness of her. She just went on a spree of using other's credit cards. Yes, it was a crime she committed. She was caught. Sentencing was only done this May - more than a year after the offence. The court put her on 2-years probation. The court must have considered a couple of factors and even though the crime is serious, she was a young girl with mental disorder when she committed the crime - not an excuse - just mitigating factors. If you are not happy with the court's decision, then go question the courts.

I am not going to talk about her mental disorder and how it is affecting her. Suffice to say, the courts took that into account to give her 2 years probation - meaning she cannot leave the country without explicit permission and she has to be home every night before 10:00pm. That is the punishment of her crime by the courts. She is paying for it. Why punish her further?

We are not court judges, are we? Whether she should be stripped of her title or not, it is really up to the contest organizer to decide. If you want to put pressure, pressure the contest organizer. There is really no point for you to bash her.

Even criminals of more vicious crimes are given second chances. What's more, a crime committed by a young girl with mental disorder. We cannot give her a second chance? She is already being punished for her crime and we should just let everything settle down.

Let the contest organizers do their part. If you feel strongly about her being not qualified to represent Singapore - then do something more fruitful other than attack a young girl behind the anonymity of the internet.

    happyeverafter said...

Ya. You are right. Not a moment of folly. 60 plus charges in consideration. But the honourable judge had already given her the sentencing. What's more do you want. Do you want to appeal against the sentence? If you feel so strongly that her punishment is inadequate, then do something about it other than hide behind the internet and "talk cock".

As for respect, no. You don't have to respect her. Yes, she screwed up big time and probably won't have many fans. Only the organizers can strip her of the title. If people are really so adamant about stripping her of the title, then do something and "pressure" the organizers. Bashing or judging her is useless.

Yada, yada. You seem to be defending alot, and in other forums, the word, "second chances" seem to be bandied about now.

My question to you is that - don't you think the fact that the judge gave her a probation instead of a jail term, means that she HAS ALREADY BEEN GIVEN a second chance?

And what did she do with this second chance? She simply went on to try and hide this fact, didn't declare it on the pre-requisite form, and then try to lie about whether ERM knows about it - look at all the contradictory things she is saying about them knowing, and all the to-ing and fro-ing since this has broken out.

What does this say about her integrity? What does this say about her not appreciating that second chance the judge gave her.

And everyone else- go take a look at the numerous Razor TV videos on the pageant - you just have to go to the site and do a search. Plenty of pretteir and more articulate girls, but why this result?

Don't you think that already says alot about this sordid saga?

    Anonymous said...

C'mon, give her more chances, let her go and take part as i believe she can win it just like how she did it this time round. But whatever method, she can do it one. Hahahaha.

    happyeverafter said...

    jane,

The sentence already given by the courts. It is already close. No point to argue about what she deserve for the crime she committed. It is OVER. Don't need to yada yada.

As for ERM, they are probably the most culpable. I shall not shall more. They as organizers are pretty silent on this - quite unthinkable. Do you know what else they don't and the did not say or take action.

Before the fraud was published in the papers - they (ERM) are in the know and they did nothing. Even till today, there is no action from them or any statement. What does that mean? I don't know. I don't want to speculate on things that I don't know.

No point going to Razor's tv and watch the video. It does not change the fact that she was crowned Miss Singapore World. She still is Miss Singapore World even if 1 million girls are better than her. This is a fact you can't change - unless they stripped her of the title.

    happyeverafter said...

She cannot speak well. She may not be the best person to represent Singapore. She has committed a crime.

    But the fact is:

    a) She was already sentenced
    b) She still is Miss Singapore World

Whether you all like it or not.. it is a fact that you can't change. You can continue to bash her or to ridicule her for all you want. It reflects more on yourselves than her.

So, until and unless ERM strip her of the title, she will represent Singapore. Just hope that she will improve on her speech and seize the opportunity to show that despite being a criminal convicted of fraud, she is able to hold her head high and press on to achieve her dream.

Anyway, I don't think I am going to post here anymore.

    happyeverafter said...

Apparently, ERM has took some action.

    So everything should stop here.

I agree we need to change the system, but she is a product of the failed system, and if we want to stop and correct the failed system, shouldn't we "remove" or prevent the image of the products of our failed system from spreading as soon as possible, for propagating her image all around, calling her ms singapore, and supporting the fact she is the image of "the near-perfect and chosen ms singapore that we should follow" just serves to worsen the situation? Doesn't continuing to make her the ms singapore show that we are never going to make a positive change, as you wanted, in the system?

Well. We are not going to miss her for long as she said in today's news that she will come back (when she qualifies legally as an ex-convict) to claim her crown. I have spotted a question what the judges will ask her... In Singapore you gave lashes to an alien (who comes from a culture where grafiti is an art form) for his expresions and you people banned chewing gum. What do you do to credit card frauds? It is clear she is a recalcitrant cheat, the stunt she just pulled has paled the credit card steal to a mere joke. It must have cost the pageant organiser hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars losses is not a surprise. If dealt with correctly the courts in Singapore would have hauled her back to be sentensed appropriately. As for those forgiving Singaporeans you would have realised that you placed your sympathy wrongly after you have read what I said. If you still support her and felt she had been unfairly dealt with, you are equally guilty of the crime.

We just missed the chance to claim the Miss World Title. Actually the pageant Organisers were clever, they had picked one that they are confident can pull a hat-trick this time. Her credentials: amassed so many credit cards that are not hers and used them and then fooled the organisers that she's clean and paraded in bigini and boomz she's Miss Sinagapore. If she goes to JoeBird she sure will bring back for us the crown. What a loss. Malulah Singapura.

OMG, the runner up is so pretty compared to the liar. But i suppose the liar won as she dare to commit credit card fraud. POWER. Go liar Go.

smart singaporean women look like shit that's why I'm chosen to represent singapore. Cause I'm the most beautiful smart singaporean bitch there is. Now where's my zipbra preens?

The more I read this, the most i'm awed by how subjective some singaporeans are. I defend the truth that Ris Low is a faudster and not qualified to be Ms Singapore. But how did this conversation churn out to a wave of name-callings? As the matter of fact, Ris Low did not bought her crown, sleep with judges or bought her 'O' level cert, until PROVEN. So let's be a bit more objective in seeing this whole episode.

I love Ris Low.Im a big fan of yours Ris.Who cares whether u can speak propery or not,you ROCK!!!You are real and not ashamed of how you speak.you dare to commit a crime but you are clean now.Who can dare claim that they've never made a mistake,PLEASE STAND UP!!!I LOVE YOU RIS!!!The rad Zipbra preens went BOOMZ!!!

    Back to the topic.

Firstly, Ris Low is too ordinary looking (or ugly) to be Ms Singapore. Yes, the runner up looks much better and more educated.

    Secondly, her English is atrocious.

Lastly, she is a liar and is convicted of fraud.

Thank god, she is no longer our Ms Singapore.

We'll forgive but we'll never forget.

Ris and ERM will be remembered as the joke of the century..

Anyway, the whole world knows of her crime now.

And ERM can't run away from the fact that they made a mistake for making her the winner.

Why are u insulting the runner up? u blind and deaf or u don't recognise beauty.

If runner up is like what u said, then Ris Low is ah lian.. or alien.

    Anonymous said...

Ris is a liar that goes BOOMz and credit card fraud specialist. Nice.

With Ris Low out of the picture, I am once again proud to call Singapore my home.

Let's just give her a break..she's still young and people do make mistake..
But I think she's creating a bigger mockery of herself with the latest back stabbing issue by the 1st runner up..
Is she ever going to stop?

    Anonymous said...

We want to forget the issue but this dumb Ris Low still refuse to give up her nonsense.

    She is a loser...

She mentioned something about people forget this in 2 yrs and she'll be a shining star... Wake up, dumbo. We, Singaporeans, have pretty good memory.

Ris Low has flat face, big teeth, very very bad personlaity, in fact a very ugly personality and God save my ears from her spoken English! Just when the world now sees how dumb and self-centered this bitch is, she has no remorse for her wrong-doings and is now even accusing other contestants of exposing her criminal records. Worse, she has simply just confirmed her ugly personality with the recent inetrview saying that after she graduate she wants to enjoy life (keep her away from credit cards everyone, banks included!!) and hopes to return to stage 2 years later as she loves being the centre of attention. Yes Miss dumbo, u are already the centre of attraction..she is already a big laughing stock! And another thing, my advice to her is to stay away from the zoo as she may scare the animals away! Also, best she dont talk as it exposes all her ugly personality, horrifying English and poor sense of fashion. I hope that she will learn her lesson soon as she appears not to have as yet. And i also now believe that a true beauty must be one with beauty and gracve from the inside before they can carry their assets well on the outside, and nope she aint got any inside nor outside.

    Shut your trap, Ris.

    Enough is enough.

Ris should keep a low profile and stop making a fool of herself.

    Ris Low,
Please forget about the come back part. Second chance is not like what you think. The short story is: to be a Beauty Queen is to be an Ambassador for the nation representing The President and the people of Singapore only because you are endowed with a diferent quality. In other words as good as being a President. Can the nation accept a person with your record to be the President? if the answer is yes then dream on. Meantime I give you a second chance, go and concentrate on your studies, keep low profile. My son had served his time inside too, now he is having a decent job earning a handsome pay and is planning to buy a private property, but there are many jobs he must forget existed, eg. all those associated to the Government.
